For this assignment we had to write a paragraph why our favourite character is the best character.
I think that PonyBoy from The Outsiders is the best character because he is very heroic and brave. After PonyBoy and Johnny run away to Jay mountain to find Dally they went to a church to stay the night and rest. They left to get things at the store and kids on a field trip went to the church. Some of the kids ended up going inside the church without the leaders knowing and the church ended up catching on fire because of PonyBoy’s smoke he left on the ground. PonyBoy and Johnny ran inside to help them even though they knew it was bad, PonyBoy felt like he should have because it was his fault. They ran in and saved the kids, but they both ended up getting hurt and Johnny’s injuries were too bad he ended up dying, PonyBoy just had a lot of injuries.
Healthy Eating at schools is a school based organization for kids grades K-12 and some local farms. The Healthy Eating at school program is giving ideas for eating healthier, or healthier options for your food. They are giving children ways to eat healthier, some of those options are making a garden in the classrooms or yard, or going on a field trip to a farmers market, etc.
If you had to create a healthy community, how would you create it?
BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND.
The habit is thinking before doing, first mentally second physically. You have to think before you do.
As an example, on a sports team. Before a game the coach gives the team a talk and saying what to do or how to act on the floor, and for some players it gives a vision of what they are gonna do on the floor. Or the coaches makes plays mentally then during practices the coach makes the players try the plays to see if they would work in a game.
As a grade eight student this habit could help me because I could think about what i'm going to write before I physically write my work and hand it in. Another example could be talking to my friends or teachers, I would have to think about what i'm going to say before I say it because I could say something wrong or they could get the wrong impression on what i'm saying.
My question is, how could you change your ways/the way you're thinking to achieve these seven habits?
James just moved from B.C. to a school in Ontario. As a grade 8 student, moving half way through a school year, he's having a hard time adjusting to all this change. He feels the reasons for his move are private, and he's not comfortable discussing them with anyone, but people keep asking about it. He feels like after the first two weeks in his new class he doesn't want to be friends with anyone. His teacher, along with the work being assigned, seems so different from what he was doing out west. James is becoming very stressed out. Just recently, he verbally abused his bus driver on his way to school and was given a suspension.
Highlight the story:
In this story James is a grade 8 student and moved halfway through the school year, he is struggling with his work at his new school. He isn't comfortable sharing his reasons for moving. James doesn't feel the need to be friends with anyone, on the way to school he verbally abused his bus driver and he was given a suspension.
To fix James' problem, I think that James could go to a mental health building after school. James could go to a mental health building because he verbally abused his bus driver, he could need help with his emotions or anger levels. Someone at the mental health building could change or help him control his emotions.
Another option could be to try to make new friends and they could help him with some school work so he isn't as stressed. Maybe opening up a bit about some things James could make friends to help him.
Do you think mental illness could be prevented?
Why do you think James won't share why he moved?

Sam and Jelissa : programmers/testers
Aidan: recorder/ documenter
Aisha and Abby: problem solvers.
Our task was to solve the hypotenuse and direct our robot on the lines of a right angled triangle with the measurements of 2.3 meters and 1.8 meters and 2.92 meters (the hypotenuse that we found). Once tasked we were able to do this….
During the presentation to the class we ended up being tied with about three other bots out of six. We were in the middle of the pack. Our robot was right on, on the first line. Then on the second line we were about 5 centimeters away from the line and we ended 5 centimeters short. Finally on the hypotenuse, we were almost right on the dot where we started.
To accomplish the task we had to start with problem solving, we solved the value for the hypotenuse.
we decided on using the lengths on the bottom left triangle and we put it into the programming for dash. We went forward 100 cm then forward 100 cm then we turned right and went 100 cm then 40 cm and then turned right and went forward 100 cm.
Aisha and Abby were the problem solvers. The first thing we did was made the 90 degree angle. The angles that created that degree were 1.80 meters and 2.30 meters. Once we did that, we needed to figure out what the what length the hypotenuse was. We squared 1.80 meters and got 3.24 meters. Then we squared 2.30 meters and got 5.29 meters. We added both of the numbers together and ended up with 8.53 meters. After we found the square root of that, the hypotenuse ended up being 2.92 meters.
Jelissa and Sam worked on the programming with dash. We worked together to try and program dash to go around the triangle with our measurements but ended up realizing that wasn’t going to work and had to use guesswork and variables while dealing with dash.
It was challenging dealing with dash he decides when not being told what to do he wanders and does whatever making it hard to decide how and when to start a test when you can't really angle him.
During programming we found out that their was no way to get the exact measurements, we could only go by 15’s but the angles weren’t all 15’s. When we tried to make the bot go back to the starting point it wouldn’t go back because the angle was in between 0 and 15. The bot had to end on either side of the starting point.
In these pictures you see Dash in the top pictures, the bottom left picture is the triangle and measurements we had to program our robot for, and the bottom right picture is the programming we used for the triangle.
For this Orbiting Jupiter assignment we had to write letters to characters in the book from Josephs perspective.
This is my Critical Thinking question for Evan. For this assignment we had to see if we knew what Critical Thinking was and if we could make a Critical Thinking question based around chapter 6. So far in the book I think it is a great book because all of the detail and how the author can describe every single emotion going through the characters minds and how they feel about everything, What do you think about the book?
So my question to Evan is When Joseph's Father stopped by Jack and Joseph's house what did Joseph's Father want to tell Jack's Family and Joseph? And how do you know that's what Joseph's Father wanted?
Could you make a connection to your life about anything that happened in the book?
Q: "If you were to write a soundtrack for your Orbiting Jupiter movie, which songs would you choose and why would you choose them?".
I picked two songs that in my opinion really went with these parts of the book.
The first song is See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth I picked this song to play when Joseph is talking about Madeline and how he would walk 7 miles everyday (except weekends) to see her because he loved her and missed her when he wasn't with her. Even though Joseph knew he could get in a lot of trouble for seeing her he still chose to. When Joseph was telling his family about everything that he did, it seemed like a very emotional time for Joseph to go back in the past and say everything that has happened to him and how much he misses Madeline and wants to see her again.
I picked See You Again because the first lyrics in the song say "It's been a long day without you my friend , and i'll tell you all about it when I see you again."
I think these lyrics really connect to the book because everyday Joseph would walk 7 miles to see Madeline after a long day of not being with her, they would talk for hours about anything that would come to mind until he had to walk home.
I also think the song connects because it also says " Good things we've been through that i'd be standing right here talking to you", In my opinion it connects because Joseph is talking about all of the good things that they've done together and how much he would still want to do them with Madeline again (skating , walking through the forest ,etc). Another line of the song I chose was "What's small turned to a friendship and that friendship turned into a bond and that bond will never be broken and the love will never get lost". I think this connects because they have always been there for each other since Joseph's dad went into her house as a plumber to fix the bathrooms , In the book it just shows they care about each other and they want to be together even though Joseph isn't allowed to see her.
One more line I chose is "How could we not talk about family when family is all we got? everything I've been through you have been standing by my side" I think this connects because once Joseph met Madeline she has been there for him through everything and thinks of him as family , as an example when he was walking to her house in the freezing rain, as soon as he got there she would let him in get him new clothes , make him hot chocolate or coffee and let him sit by the fire so he would be warm until he had to leave.
In general its a very sad song and that connects because Madeline has passed away and the song and pace of the song just makes the mood.
The second song I picked was Ride out (only the chorus) by Kid Ink , Tyga and 3 other's . I wanted this song to be used during the fight scene because in the song it says " squad up , never roll alone" and in the book Jack comes into the grade 8 fight even though he is a grade 6 and Joseph told him not to get involved, that shows how much Jack cares about Joseph and is there for him if he needs him. In the book when Jack was in the office because he got in the fight Mr. Canton asked why he didn't go get a teacher instead of joining the fight to defend Joseph and Jack asked would you ever leave someone in a fight to go get a teacher? Jack knew helping Joseph was the right thing instead of getting a teacher Jack wanted to help Joseph because Jack is his family even though they haven't known each other for a long time he still thinks of him as family and needs to stand up for him.
Another reason why I picked the song is because it says " Ride out forever, ride out together". I think those lyrics connect because Joseph and Jack have only known each other for a little while and in the fight scene it shows the Jack does care about Joseph. I know Jack cares about him because when Joseph walked off the bus because of the driver Jack followed him because he didn't want Joseph to be alone even though he knew he had to walk 2 miles in some what cold weather to get to school every morning until it got to cold to walk.
These are my reasons why I picked See You Again when Joseph is talking about Madeline and Ride Out to play during the fight scene.
“If you were to cast a movie for Orbiting Jupiter which actors/actresses would you choose to play the lead roles and why?”
Jack: Josh Feldman.
(Josh Feldman is 16 years old and has played a role in seven movies.)
I picked Josh Feldman to play Jack’s role because he is an award winning and multiple nominated actor. Also Josh won the 2013 Young Artist Award and was nominated Best Lead Young Actor for the 2013 awards for playing Carter in Santa pups 2. Also Josh plays a role in the horror movie “the sleepover”, that movie gave Josh the second Young Actor's Award and nominated for best actor in a short film. I think Josh would be perfect for the role of Jack because Josh is younger and can pass off as a 6th grader , Josh isn't very old he's still a teenager instead of being in his twenties or thirties. I also think Josh would be really friendly , caring and loyal because in Santa Pups 2 ( I haven't seen all of it ) Josh was very loyal and friendly to the dogs because he could have left them in the snow but he helped them because they were stuck , Josh could have walked away and let them struggle but he helped them. Another part in the movie was when the pups were stuck on cracked ice and Josh helped them, this connects to the movie because in the movie Joseph gets stuck on the ice and Jack has to help him , this means Josh is respectful and brave because in Orbiting Jupiter the ice cracks and that takes a lot of bravery to go and help someone. I haven't really seen any movies Josh Feldman has been in but just reading the reviews or reading comments about him in the movies , he sounds like he would be perfect fit for the role of Jack.
I also think Josh should play Jack because of the way he looks , Josh has brown hair and brown eyes , he would be a perfect fit in the family because in my opinion I would picture the family with brown hair and brown eyes , I would think of them as a mysterious family once Joseph comes into the family.
I also think Josh would play as Joseph because he is a young actor and he is very talented. I think he is talented because Josh has played roles in different types of movies , Josh has played roles in horror films , action , dramatic and adventure family kids movies. Since Josh can play roles in so many types of movies and play every role almost perfectly so He should play a pretty good Jack in Orbiting Jupiter.
Joseph: Nicholas Bode.
(Nicholas Bode is 16 years old and has been in one movie but has made small appearances in a 7 television shows.)
I picked Nicholas Bode because he played Aidan Maxwell in the award winning feature film Molly Maxwell(meaning people know about him).
I think Nicholas should play Joseph because Nicholas dresses in black and has black hair and black eyes as it said in the book , if the actor I chose had blue eyes or blonde hair it wouldn't fit the character . In my opinion Nicholas looks a lot like Joseph , Nicholas has black hair and brown/black eyes and he has the sad look on his face all the time , I think that (brown hair and brown eyes) would fit perfectly in the family because I picture the family to have all brown hair and brown eyes . I think that Nicholas would play Joseph because of the way he played Broody in Bunks, in the movie Bunks Broody was a mysterious boy at camp that didn’t talk very much and wore black all the time , was very jumpy if anyone came near him or touched him , didn’t participate in anything , didn't share anything about his personal life unless someone asked or he wanted to , and Broody always had the fear in his eyes like something had just scared him , by the end of the movie everyone found out Broody was really smart and had a lot of good ideas.
Broody and Joseph are very similar , from the way they act and do things to the way they dress and look. If Nicholas played Joseph the same way he played Broody in Bunks he should be an amazing actor for Joseph in Orbiting Jupiter.
These are the reasons why I think Josh Feldman should play Jack and Nicholas Bode should play Joseph.
Q: "As an audience member to Orbiting Jupiter , how do you think Joseph's character has changed from chapter 1 to chapter 2?".
In the first chapter maybe half of the teachers didn't like Joseph for numerous reasons ( Joseph not participating and talking to the teachers badly) and they don't think he should be at Eastham middle school but some of the teachers think he should be at Eastham middle school, they just haven't really gotten to know him or talked to him the teachers just saw the way he acts and his past life.
As an example Coach Swieteck thinks Joseph is terrific, Coach Swieteck found out Joseph can do better things than any other eighth grader he's ever coached before , Joseph can do amazing things as an example he can do a handstand on parallel bars one handed , and he can do a double back flip , Joseph can also climb the rope in 38 seconds without using his legs and that was the only thing coach could teach him. Joseph and coach are getting to be really good friends unlike any other teacher he's met so far. This connects to the question because in chapter 1 Joseph didn't like very many teachers and the teachers didn't really like him either because the way he was acting and the fact he went to Juvenile prison and he has a child , the teachers don't think of him as a normal kid at Eastham middle school. So it's good that some teachers think of Joseph as a normal kid.
Another teacher that likes Joseph is Mr. D'ULney , he likes him because this one day Mr. D'ULney was at bus duty and he was asking Joseph geometry questions and Joseph answered every question right , Mr .D'ULney is one of the only teachers that now knows Joseph is smart. Most of the other teachers watch Joseph not participate and they think he isn't smart because he shows no participation in classes. Now Mr. D'ULney knows Joseph is smart so he gives Joseph a question and he gets to work at then gives it back when he is done . I guess that it the connection between Joseph and Mr. D'ULney and that is why Joseph likes him as a teacher. These are the reasons why Joseph has changed as a student from chapter 1 to chapter 2.
My question to you is , do you think Joseph will ever be treated like a good kid?
